Applet Check Help

This web page provides help for resolving Applet issues.  It is designed to be used with the status messages from the "Applet Check" web page (Applet Check).

Note:  If none of the suggestions below fix your Applet problems and you see the message "Error: Applet load problem." then you may have "Firewall" issues.

Errors & Suggested fix IE (Win XP browser):

• "Error:  JavaScript is not supported" - You probably will not see these words on the "Applet Check" web page.  If you do, then your browser doesn't support JavaScript or JavaScript has been disabled.
  • Suggested fix for IE:
    • Tools, Internet Options, click the "Security" tab, then click "Default Level".  You should see the words "Medium".  Now click "Apply", then click "OK".   This should enable "JavaScript".
    • Close all browser windows.  Open up a new browser window and test again.
  • IE:  To simulate this error:
    • Tools, Internet Options, click the "Security" tab, then click "Custom Level".
    • Disable the property:  "Scripting", "Active Scripting".
• "Error: Java is not enabled." - Java Applet support has been disabled by your browser's security settings.
  • Suggested fix for IE:
    • Tools, Internet Options, click the "Security" tab, then click "Default Level".  You should see the words "Medium".  Now click "Apply", then click "OK".  This should enable "Java Applets".
    • Close all browser windows.  Open up a new browser window and test again.
  • IE:  To simulate this error:
    • Tools, Internet Options, click the "Security" tab, then click "Custom Level".
    • Disable the property:  "Microsoft VM", "Java Permissions".
• "Error: Applet load problem." - Your browser has Applet support problems.  You need to install (or re-install) Sun's JVM.
  • Suggested fix for IE:
    • Install (or re-install) Sun's JVM (Java Virtual Machine) - also know as JRE (Java Runtime Environment)
    • Before we do this step let's make sure that your browsers security is set to "Medium".
      • Tools, Internet Options, click the "Security" tab.
      • If you see the words "Medium" the you are OK.  If not, then click "Default Level", click "Apply", click "OK".
      • If you didn't see the words "Medium", then run the "Applet Check" again before you continue.
    • Close all the applications/windows on your computer.
    • The next section will install software so you will need to be logged into your computer with a logon ID that has "Administrative" rights.
      If you know you don't have "Admin" rights then contact your IT Support group - do not continue.
    • To install/re-install Sun's JVM do the following steps:
      • Click the following link:
        http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/index.jsp - Desktop Java (Java Plugin Technology)
      • Click the link "Download" on the left side of the screen (at the top below the words "Java Plug-in Technology".
      • Click the link "Download Production Release 1.4" - The first link in the middle of the screen.
      • Click the link "Download J2SE JRE" - between the 2nd & 3rd black horizontal bar.
      • Click "OK" if you get a Security Alert that you are going to view pages over a secure connection..
      • Click the selection "Accept License Agreement"
      • Click on the link for "Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language"
        (Note: about 15.2 MB download)
      • Click "Run". (Note: You can click "Save" and then run the EXE file after the download.)
      • Now follow the instructions to install the Sun JRE Software.
        • Do you want to run this software? - Click "Run"
        • Click "Next"
        • Click "Finish"
      • Reboot your computer.
      • Open up a new browser window and test again.
• "Error: Applet scripting disabled." - Your browser security has disabled the scripting of Applets.
  • If you have your browser configured to see JavaScript errors you will get the following error:
    Error:  Object doesn't support this property or method.
  • Suggested fix for IE:
    • Tools, Internet Options, click the "Security" tab, then click "Default Level".  You should see the words "Medium".  Now click "Apply", then click "OK".   This should enable "Scripting of Applets".
    • Close all browser windows.  Open up a new browser window and test again.
  • IE:  To simulate this error:
    • Tools, Internet Options, click the "Security" tab, then click "Custom Level".
    • Disable the property:  "Scripting", "Scripting of Applets".
